MALI

IMA in collaboration with Arup, del Buono Gazerwitz and Kindred Form entered the MALI competition to provide a new contemporary art wing for the museum in Lima Peru.

Our concept focused on the need to establish an appropriate and sympathetic personality between the historic pavilion, remodelled park and proposed gallery wing.

We developed an elegant subterranean solution to provide a creative destination for both city dwellers and visitors to enjoy.

The new wing comprised 3 floors of accommodation, all enclosed by a series of single span roof beams and glass roof. The entrance lobby and main gallery space were located at the plaza level and accessed directly from the park and the street. The gallery was designed around a 3.0m planning grid with the roof beams containing an integral partitioning track system which allowed walls to be moved anywhere within the main space on 3.0m modules.

The gallery was sheltered from direct sunlight by an external shading grid and adjustable louvres enabled the amount of daylight delivered for each exhibition change.

Throughout the gallery different levels also acted as large multi-functional spaces to host functions for both municipal and private sponsors. All of the floors were linked by generous staircases and lifts set within an internal top-lit atrium space.
